The Life Palace, 命宫, is the center of personal character in Zi Wei Dou Shu. It shows how someone meets the world: their temperament, instincts, preferred pace, social manner, and the qualities others notice first. It does not describe every event by itself; rather, it sets the lens through which career, relationships, resources, and timing are experienced. In reading it, begin with the major star or stars present, then judge their condition by brightness, elemental nature, supportive or challenging companions, and whether the Four Transformations modify their expression. Auspicious stars can steady the palace, while difficult stars may add pressure, restlessness, or sharpness without making the person “bad.” The Life Palace must also be read with its opposite palace, the Move/Travel Palace (迁移宫), because self and world mirror each other here: how one presents inwardly is tested, reflected, and completed by public environments, mobility, and encounters outside the familiar circle. Then confirm the picture through the three-directional support of the relevant triad and the four cardinal palaces.
When the Life Palace is empty
When the Life Palace has no major star, it does not mean a weak life or missing identity. It means the palace is read by borrowing the major stars from the opposite Move/Travel Palace, then confirming with the three-directional and four-cardinal structure, plus the supporting minor stars and Four Transformations. In practice, the person’s character often shows itself more clearly through action, environment, and interaction with the outside world.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Life Palace the same as the Western rising sign?
Not exactly. Both describe how a person appears and approaches life, but the Life Palace is a broader center of character in Zi Wei Dou Shu and must be judged through its stars, brightness, opposite palace, and surrounding structure.
Does a difficult star in the Life Palace mean a difficult life?
No. A strong or severe star may show intensity, pressure, or a sharper style, but the outcome depends on the whole chart, including support from the triads, the Four Transformations, and the timing of major and annual cycles.
Which palace should I read together with the Life Palace first?
Read the opposite Move/Travel Palace first, because it reflects how the person meets the outer world; then check the connected palaces in the three-directional and four-cardinal pattern to see what supports or tests the Life Palace.
